OUPV Course Outline....

I thought it would be a good idea to provide a glimpse of what we will be covering during my Seattle OUPV license training class next week. What I have here is the actual course outline that I submitted to USCG-National Maritime Center for approval. The course has four subject or learning modules.....

1.0 Navigation General
1.1 Navigation Pubs, Charts, ATONS (Aids to Navigation) - 6 hours
1.2 Magnetic and Gyro Compasses - 2 hours
1.3 Weather and Oceanography - 4 hours
Total Module Hours - 12

2.0 Piloting
2.1 Chart Reading - Navigation - 12 hours
(includes, chart reading, latitude - longitude, circular direction, (magnetic compass) cross bearing fix, running fix, distance, speed - time and distance calculations, DR plot, set and drift, and course to steer (current triangle)
Total Module Hours - 12

3.0 Navigation Rules
3.1 Introduction to Nav Rules -0.5 hour
3.2 General Rules - 1 hour
3.3 Part B: Steering-Sailing Rules–Sec. I - 3 hours
3.4 Part B: Steering-Sailing Rules-Sec. II - 3 hours
3.5 Part B: Restricted Visibility - 1 hour
3.6 Part C: Lights and Shapes - 4 hour
3.7 Part D: Sounds and Light Signals - 2.5 hours
3.8 Part E: Exemptions-Annexes - 3 hours
Total Module Hours - 18

4.0 Deck Gen-Safety
4.1 CFR General - UPV (Uninspected Passenger Vessels) Rules and Regulations - 3.5 hours
4.2 Pollution and Sanitation - 1 hour
4.3 Marlinspike and Seamanship - 1.5 hours
4.4 Anchoring and Ground Tackle - 1 hour
4.5 Ship Handling-Maneuvering - 3 hour
4.6 Fire Fighting-Prevention - 1.5 hour
4.9 Emergency Procedures-Lifesaving - 7.5 hours
4.10 Marine Radiotelephone - 1 hour
4.11 Small Marine Engines - 1 hour
